About Us & Our Antibacterial Wound Care Range

Here at Equi-Med horses form a huge part of our lives, we understand the effect injury and infection can have on the horse’s well-being as well as our pockets!!

Over the years of caring for and competing our horses in BSJA, BE & BD, we feel we are now some way to understanding which products would make life easier for both the busy competition rider, leisure rider and horse owners in general.

So when we realised how effective activated carbon fabric with silver (Ag) is at killing bacteria, we dedicated 3 years to designing and developing products, that can help soothe skin conditions that horse and dog owners have to deal with on a daily basis.

In 2012 we were very excited for Cedric C-H. Chan, BVSc CertES(Orth) DiplECVS MRCVS, Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons RCVS & European Recognised Specialist in Equine Surgery  to join the Equi-Med Ag team! Cedric helps research and develop the products utilising his vast experience in the field of wound management.

From small acorns…

In 2011 our Research Scientist had spent two years working with a manufacturer of activated carbon fabric. During that time we became aware of the powerful antibacterial effects of activated carbon and silver. We were intrigued by this product and couldn’t wait to try it out on a horse! Kay had a horse called Charmer that had cracked heels at the time. After numerous vet bills and failed attempts with lotions and potions he became the perfect guinea pig!! We were amazed to discover that the cracked heels looked much improved within days. That was the start of the journey gathering many more case studies.

Since then we have generated scientific* antibacterial evidence to prove how effective this product is and over the first two years we worked very closely with vets at Bearl Equine,  a very successful equestrian practice in Stocksfield, Northumberland. Bearl have a very modern, state of the art clinic that tend to all equestrian needs on site, from MRI scans to colic surgery. Also dealing with many surgical referrals from surrounding practices.  It goes without saying that partners Jonathon Wainwright and Alex Font were very keen to trial this new to the market technology and found they were extremely impressed with the results. Having gained scientific* evidence proving the effectiveness of the fabric and having seen powerful clinical evidence from case studies, we proceeded to design products, we felt would be of benefit to both the pet owner and vets alike. Due to popular demand we have now created a whole range of equine and small animal products.
